OOPS!!!!!!!! Above is my Miss October of My Calendar Girls series. It was my understanding that I was painting Geisha girls.
However, I purchased a booth at the Market fest at our local Y and was told by not one but two ladies that some of my girls are Chinese and not Japanese, as I had thought for YEARS.
The first oriental lady told me that Miss March, Miss May and Miss February were not Japanese. She did not show the polite Japanese side that I much appreciate about their culture. She walked away from my booth in a HUFF saying "I am Japanese, and I know Japanese." THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME I EVER HAD EVEN THOUGHT OF SOME OF MY LADIES AS ANYTHING BUT JAPANESE. First of all, I would never insult the Japanese in any form as I consider them the world's most polite society. Just look how they reacted to the great earthquake disaster.
The second oriental lady was much younger than the first and she explained to me why she considered Miss October and Miss September to be Chinese instead of Japanese. It was their clothes. Both indicated Miss March was Chinese because of her hair. Puppy who was keeping me company at the booth said I could redo the months in question. Duh, it took me THREE years to paint all of these ladies and the cultures in question will have to forgive my knowledge and limitations. I think all my Calendar Girls are beautiful ladies no matter what nationality they happen to be.
The kitty justice is that both oriental ladies only agreed on Miss March. So again I shall act like Rick Perry "OOPS"

Hi Di, SO--you had an OOPS moment!!!!! Who would have known though???? I had no idea that the calendar girls were not all Japanese.... I can't tell the difference --but I'm sure people from those areas know the differences...

Glad you found out though.. NOW---Santa says: "Don't ever make a mistake like that again!!!!" ha ha ha....

Merry Christmas.

I need to fix my website to not indicate they are all Geisha girls. Like I said "oops" I really did not know. I guess Santa will bring me a culture lesson. Peace
Like you said....they are beautiful no matter what the differences...

Well, don't go beating yourself up about it, Lady Di! The Japanese very impolitely are using $28m that they were generously handed by overseas charities because of the devastation they suffered at the hands of the tsunami earlier this year to help fund their slaughter of whales in the Great Southern Ocean.

How in the heck can they justify that? You made me feel better about the whole thing. At least I did it unintentional but you cannot say that about the whale slaughter. Peace

If it pleases you, what difference does it make. Like they say, you can't please all of the people all of the time. So no sense in even trying. Merry Christmas. Sorry haven't been around for a while, trying to play catch up again.

After the Holidays, I will try to change the wording on my bio page of the website to say Asian Ladies as that is what they are.
Glad to see you and I know how busy we all are during this time. Peace and Merry Christmas.

I'm rather suspicious of japanese politeness.
As for your paintings, all that matters is the fact tht they're beautiful.
