Last 2 days

Please click on the photo to enlarge. Even in the rain the last two days, these pretty birds have visited our feeders. We now have dozens of them both male and female and we have to fill the bird feeders daily to keep them in food. Then we get to enjoy and admire them the rest of the day.
Monday it rained a good four inches here and then more on Tuesday. Today it started cloudy but the sun is now out to enjoy. When the sun light hits the chest on the males well only one word can explain it and it is BRILLIANT.
The Kitty Justice is we are THANKFUL for no damage on the Hill but our hearts and prayers go out to all who were effected by the last two days of storms.

Little flower big smell

I love this little vase that Bep gave Mimi years ago. A few flowers and you have a nice little arrangement to enjoy at the kitchen table.
I have planted Lilies of the Valley all around the house and the cabin. They had just started to bloom when I picked these for Mimi to enjoy. The little flowers at the bottom are just one small bunch from my Vibriumim bush. Both have a unique fragrance.
The Kitty Justice is this is a cool way to enjoy flowers more often.

 Male Cardinal
 Red Bellied Woodpecker
 Downy Woodpecker

I call them Pretty Birds as they are dressed in formal attire.
The Kitty Justice is I wonder which affair they plan to attend.

Red Breasted Grosbeak

I started seeing one a day starting in the middle of the week but each time I thought of getting the camera they would be gone. Today at lunch we had five or more males and one female.
The Kitty Justice is I sat at the kitchen table until I could get a few photos. Glad I washed the windows Wednesday.

Natchez Trace in Spring

Saturday Prince took us on a drive down the Trace. This time of year the Red bud trees are in full form. We refer to our trip as going down the Tunnel of Purple. The dogwood trees were just beginning to pop out and will probably be out in full form next week if the weather continues on this path.
The Kitty Justice is it is always a colorful rush to go in either direction on the Trace in Spring.

Turkeys gone courting

The hens are ignoring the males below.

The males are like teenage boys strutting around puffing up to show off but still the hens ignore them.
The kitty justice is the daily show will continue until the hens go to nest.

Dog woods up close to house

This white dogwood tree was dug  up out of the woods on the farm and replanted years ago in the yard. I thought it looked great with the Japanese red maple behind it.
This pink dogwood was given to me by Mimi but for some reason it has not grown very tall. But the blooms are gorgeous. Photo below. It is out front and both it and the white one can be seen from the hall.

This light pink dogwood is not as old as the one out front but it likes where it has been planted out back between the house and the cabin and it is twice as tall as the one out front. However, the blooms are pale and not the deep color pink.
The Kitty Justice is they are all very pretty and enjoyed.

Japanese Red Maple

As you can see the tree has not gotta a full coat of leafy clothes but if you stand under it and look up (photo below) it shows it's colors dramatically .
The kitty justice is can you imagine how pretty it will be with all it's clothes.

 The Big Guy.
 Let's stroll up the Hill.
Hey, this how you do it. See my wings touch the ground.
Bye, Bye Baby Good Bye.

The first Friday morning in April outside my bedroom window, I heard "Gobble, gobble, gobble."
From the morning rain there were rain drops all over my window BUT then it dawned on me the adjoining bedroom would be further under the eves. Quickly, I retrieved my camera from the library and got a step stool(this is a natural thing to do if you are one of the short people) to stand on so I could capture the above photos.
A little fact from our TWRA calendar, turkeys have 5,500 feathers of which 18 are long tail feathers.
The Kitty Justice is I wonder who counted those feathers to provide us with the fact.

Vinia was sixteen when this photo was taken. When I was looking up our family history, I located a Great Aunt with the name Vinia.  Mother and my big Sis are the only ones I had ever known to have this name until I went on a history search and that Great Aunt was the only other I found with the name. To correctly pronoun you let the second i be silent. It is Vi (long i) Na.
She was absolutely THE BEST WOMAN I HAVE EVER KNOWN. She taught me quite a lot and I am thankful of the wisdom she imparted.  When folks say I remind them of my Mother, well I puff up like a true bandy hen. No better compliment can be given to me.
The Kitty Justice is today is her birthday and I wish I could say to her "Happy Birthday."

Do you see the ANGRY FACE IN THE SKY? We all have one of those faces and sometimes we show it and other times we wear duck feathers and let a comment or action just roll off our feathers.
Do you have a phrase that can make you instantly see the color red and you have to bite your tongue to keep from getting in someone's face. If you want to rub Kitty Justice's fur the wrong way all you have to say is "YOU NEED TO DO ----" No matter what it happens to be that I need to do per you, that phrase is like striking a match to brush soaked in kerosene.  Hey, I am 64 years old and if I do not know what needs to be done now, well don't tell me as I do not wish to hear your suggestion. My big Sis was the world's worst until I just flat told her not to ever use that phrase on me again because I was 64 damn years old and I knew what I needed to do. Since then she has never used that phrase again in my presents. She and others may still think I need to do --- but she is not saying it out loud to me.  Yep, I may know what I need to do but it just might not be the time or the place to do it. As Clint Eastwood's character, Gunney Highway said "You have to adapt, overcome and improvise."(Can yawl tell I like to quote, Clint) The main thing I need to do is keep a good attitude and be HAPPY.
The Kitty Justice is to keep your council  to yourself as this Kat travels her own path.

Benni's Flowers

Last Thursday with camera in hand, I walked over to the neighbors yard to see what she had in bloom. Her row of buttercups where swaying in the wind to the happy tune of Yellow. Is there a Happier color? I for one do not know of any other color that speaks happiness like Yellow. They sit above the wall and overlook the green stems of Iris. When the Iris bloom they are the first thing you see when you get to the top of the Hill. They greet you with a "Glad you are here, feeling." Her crocus are gone from the round bed but have been replaced with a few tulips. When she first planted them it was like a mini Cheekwood display but alas time and deer have taken their toll. When Puppy was 2, Prince and I planted tulips below and all the way up the driveway. I found out then that they are not satisfactory for the hill. I need something hardy and deer resist . When I put a bulb, plant, seed etc in the ground, I make them promise they will return each year as I cannot continue to DIG in this hard soil with rocks.
The Kitty Justice is I have a long list of what not to plant on the Hill.

First Sunday in April

The old pear tree may be gargled and weathered from many years on the hill but it is still flowering for all of us to enjoy. The bees are buzzing, the birds are sitting in it singing and when the fruit appears, the raccoons will be throwing pears on the ground for the deer.( I have seen this event by 3 raccoon with 2 doe under the tree munching away.)  Looks like we are gonna have a mighty fine crop of pears. Do you liked baked pears? I like them cooked, canned and raw. Just any way I can eat them give my taste buds a true sense of Heaven.  My mother use to peel , core and grate the pears for her preserves. You talk about GOOD with a home made biscuits and real butter topped with her preserves. Ah, that was some fine eating.
The Kitty Justice is do you eat foods that bring back childhood memories?

First Thursday of April

While it has been quite warm of late but we have not broken a record even when we reached 82 the other day as the record was 86. I have used those warm days to stay outdoors, moving ground cover, planting seeds, pulling weeds and cleaning out flower beds. Yes, I did my best Clint Eastwood routine but I did over do it a little one day. Nothing to fret about but then I had to just walk around the yard looking at all my to do things. I wish to stay upright so even though it can be frustrating to see all that needs to be done, it is best to respect my limitations.
Friday morning at five a hard rain storm came through. It was a weather alert for some folks and I was thankful to hear the news person say no one had been hurt. Anyway, I wanted to take a few photos of the yard. The buttercups by the rake are no longer standing at attention as the heavy rain was unkind to their spines. The second photo is of the old seeder and you can see my little pine. Beside the pine are buttercups and garlic close to the little sun dial. On the far right edge you can see my snow ball bush has a little green on its branches. A big oak with a three foot diameter use to stand in the spot where the seeder is located. The huge shell use to line the driveway of Waveland ( see 8-22-07 and 8-24-07 post). Cuden Mary Lu ( see post 8-23-07)  would go to Florida and return with shells. This is the only shell  I know that has survived time. The creeping Jenny has really crept. I took about 3 or 4 sprigs a few years back from my neighbors yard and look how
much it has spread. You can tell in the second photo that there are a few bags (41) of mulch to  put out on my flower beds. Prince on his way home from work Wednesday and Thursday brought a load home each day. The Pin Oak tree has not shed all its leaves and I will just have to wait to have a leaf free bed.
We may have a few of those pesky winters, dogwood winter, blackberry winter, etc etc. but they do not last long so I do believe Mother Nature has kick Old Man Winter back to where he came from. The Kitty Justice is you do not mess with Mother Nature.

Surprises from Prince

As I was busy preparing the Reuben Casserole, Prince came in from work with these bunnies.
When he comes in the door he will anounce he has me a surprise. I know he has either been to the Gift Shop at St. Thomas West , Hallmark or sometimes a big box store or nursery or even a road side fruit stand. Whatever, he brings me either big or small makes me feel so very special because I know I was in his thoughts when he made the purchase.
He meant to get only two but the one in the red dress reminded him of my mother, Vinia therefore, she got to come home with him too.
The Kitty Justice is I treasure my Surprises but most of all  My Prince.

Ruben Casserole

I have been in the numerous cookbooks that Mimi has collected over the years and I found a Ruben Casserole. Last night I tried the recipe and I always ask when I try something new if it should be a keeper or not. This one made the keep list. On page 232 under beef in "The Texas Experience-Friendship and Food Texas Style" a cookbook from the Richardson Woman's Club was the new recipe. This book was in the Fifth Printing in 1986 and at each printing 10,000 copies were printed. There may have been additional printings since then but if yawl locate a copy, I would advise buying one as it has several new recipes I have flagged to try.
In case you cannot find a copy, here is the recipe

1 11oz can sauerkraut
2 tomatoes. sliced
2 Tbsp butter
2 Tbsp Thousand Island Dressing
1-8 oz. can corned beef, shredded
8 oz. shredded Swiss cheese
party rye bread for topping

Spread drained sauerkraut in 8 x 12 dish. Top with tomato slices. Dot with butter and dressing. Cover with corned beef. Sprinkle with cheese. Bake at 425 for 15 minutes. Remove casserole from the oven. Butter one side of the rye bread and place it butter side up over top of the cheese. Return to oven and bake for 15 to 20 minutes longer. Serves 6-8

The Kitty Justice is to say "Thank You Virginia Suttle.

Some Kitty Justice notes, I might put the sauerkraut between paper towels and squeeze out excess moisture. I would thinly slice only one tomato. I used sliced corn beef instead of shredded so I might shred it the next time.
The Kitty Justice is yawl can use my helpful hints or not. Enjoy
