LST 325
The above two photos were taken from the pedestrian bridge and the one below was taken from my perch on River Front Park's wall before we joined the line to tour the ship.
A Landing Ship Tank came to Nashville by way of the Cumberland River. It was set up for tours all last week and today has gone to Clarksville.
A LST-325 was nicknamed the Gray Lady. However, one of the tour guides(mostly war veterans) said the LST stood for Long Slow Target. Top speed is about 12 miles an hour.
This vessel of WWII is 99 percent original and operates on its own power.
The brochure stated that there were 1,051 ships like this one built for WWII. Seventy percent were built on the Ohio and Illinois Rivers. It was designed to carry tanks, troops and cargo onto a hostile beach and then retract off therefore it has a flat bottom which makes sea going rather rocky.
With that thought, the Kitty Justice is to carry a barf bag at all times.
